FDA Considers Electronic Cigarette Endorsement

Electronic cigarettes are quickly becoming the most popular way to quit smoking traditional cigarettes. E cigs give users a small kick of nicotine through water vapor and contain none of the harmful ingredients found in tobacco. But if e cigs are completely different from regular tobacco cigarettes, why are they getting such a bad rap? Some call it an easy way for teens to start smoking, while ignoring the health benefits compared to that of cigarettes.

E cigs contain no tobacco, yet the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is in the process of making a decision on whether to classify e-cigarettes in the same category as tobacco products. Some time this month, the FDA will begin regulating electronic cigarettes, but one question still looms: how tight will the regulation be? There is room within the regulation to include valid labeling on packages, prohibiting the sale of e-cigarettes to minors and the overseeing of manufacturing processes.

While smoking has declined since it became known smoking cigarettes comes with severe health issues, millions continue to do so. Many have tried to quit using patches and nicotine-infused gum, but a majority can’t kick the habit. Electronic cigarettes bring an entirely new approach to the quitting game: the feeling of smoking a cigarette, without the harmful chemicals and tobacco that accompany it. With the worldwide death toll of cigarette smoking expected to hit one billion this century, it’s time health organizations take note of the effects that e-cigarettes have on smokers’ ability to quit.

In the United States, smoking kills roughly 450,000 people prematurely every year, and over 8.5 million people suffer from the effects of smoking and of those around them. But with all of these warnings and facts about the dangers and risks of traditional cigarettes, almost 20 percent of the population continues to smoke.

What is it going to take to get anti-tobacco groups to realize that “just quit” campaigns aren’t enough? Quitters are turning to remedies that seem to have little to no effect on trying to kick their habit, yet health organizations and pharmaceutical companies are continuing to push these products over the counters. One thing is for sure: If the rate of smoking and those who fall victim to its lethal tendencies doesn’t drop dramatically, something must be done.
