Can nicotine make employees more productive? A new study says “yes”

With the benefits of nicotine on the brain continuing to emerge, employers should take advantage of nicotine’s usefulness as a work drug and allow their workers to vape at work. An in-depth National Institute on Drug Abuse analysis showed that nicotine makes the brain faster and more precise, giving the brain more stamina. These are effects that could contribute to more productive employees.

Studies have found that nicotine can improve memory and concentration

The study conducted 48 experiments on multiple groups of volunteers who completed a set of standardized computer tests. Half of the group received nicotine, and the other half received a placebo. The group that received nicotine performed better than the control group in almost all of the tests, regardless of whether or not they were smokers. These findings were especially apparent in areas of precision, attention, memory, speed and focus.

Nicotine has also been shown in multiple tests to improve brain stamina. One study measured overnight performance by assigning smokers and non-smokers five different computer tests to be taken over the course of twelve hours beginning at 8:00 p.m. For all tests, the non-smoker concentration levels deteriorated after two hours, whereas the smokers were able to concentrate until 4:00 a.m.

The National Institute on Drug Abuse analysis revealed that nicotine consistently created a better performance compared to a placebo.

Will “vape breaks” soon replace smoke breaks?

These surprising results call into question the idea of prohibiting nicotine in the workplace. Unlike traditional cigarettes, e-cigarettes do not produce second-hand smoke. They only emit water vapor, which is why many businesses and public institutions that prohibit smoking allow e-cigarettes. Employers should open their eyes to the benefits of nicotine and do the same.
